At dawn on June 6, 1944, soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division, "The Big Red One”, formed part of the first assault waves to strike Omaha Beach during the Allied invasion of Normandy. Landing under relentless enemy fire, these American infantrymen fought their way through the surf and across the heavily defended beach, overcoming formidable obstacles and steep bluffs to establish a foothold in occupied Europe.

The courage, sacrifice, and determination displayed by the men of the Big Red One on D-Day became one of the defining chapters in the history of the United States Army. Their success helped open the road to the liberation of Western Europe and ultimately to Allied victory in World War II.

“We’ll Never Forget” commemorates the valor of those soldiers who, in the face of overwhelming odds, carried the battle from the beaches of Normandy into the heart of occupied Europe. It is dedicated to the men of the 1st Infantry Division and to all who served with honor on June 6, 1944.

The painting was commissioned by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Class of 1994. The insignia of the US Army college is imprinted on the bottom left in gold.
